1972. Power-assisted steering with self-centering on the SM Maserati.

The Citroën SM equipped with power-assisted steering with self-centering (DIRAVI) was launched in March 1972. It is a grand tourer car, equipped with a Maserati 6-cylinder engine. The power steering is speed-sensitive, with hydraulic self-centering in a straight line, even once the car has stopped. In reality, the assistance is constant. It is the straight-line self-centering force that is speed-sensitive and which gives the impression, for small steering angles, that the assistance decreases. One of the particularities of the DIRAVI is that it is irreversible: the movement can only be transmitted in one direction, from the steering wheel to the wheels.
