Understanding this document

In this document

This document is a family tree organised into four generations, presented in the form of rectangles connected by lines, on a light blue background.

Generation 1 — the founding couple

The starting point is Paul Ernest Mary Magès, born on 9 March 1908 in Aussois (Savoie) and died on 22 September 1999 in Garches (Hauts-de-Seine), married to Andrée Jeanne Rose Tonat, wife of Magès, born on 29 January 1910 in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon (Rhône) and died on 12 April 1996 in Louveciennes (Yvelines) p. 1.

Generation 2 — the children

Six children are listed, all born in Chaville (Hauts-de-Seine): Michel Marcel Marie (8 October 1936), Pierre Georges Marie (28 October 1937), Marie-Thérèse Anne Gabrielle (8 March 1939), Danielle Odette Jeanne Marie (31 March 1942), Jean-Claude Louis Marie (27 June 1943) and Alain Michel Mary (13 February 1950) p. 1.

Generation 3 — grandchildren

Seven grandchildren appear, born between 1962 and 1979, in various locations: Savigny-sur-Orge, Lyon, Paris 16th, Bourges, Bagnols-sur-Cèze, Versailles p. 1.

Generation 4 — great-grandchildren

Nine great-grandchildren are listed, born between 1993 and 2004, notably in Paris (14th), Sèvres, Lyon and Versailles p. 1.

Context

Paul Magès is known in automotive history as the engineer who designed, at Citroën, the hydropneumatic suspension, an iconic technology of the DS presented in 1955. This technical and professional context, however, does not appear anywhere in this document, which belongs exclusively to the family and genealogical sphere.

The birthplaces of the children — Chaville, in the Hauts-de-Seine, near the Citroën industrial sites in the Paris region — are explained by the engineer's career, who joined Citroën in August 1925 and remained in the company for 49 years before retiring in September 1974 (photographs of the retirement): the children were all born in Chaville between 1936 and 1950, during the years he worked in the design office and developed the hydropneumatic suspension. The collection also establishes that Paul Magès retired to Ramatuelle (Var) after his retirement, where he became a municipal councillor and then 2nd deputy mayor (list of members of the municipal council) — a biographical element that this family tree, focused on lineage, does not mention.

Archivist's perspective

This document is distinguished from the other technical and professional archives in the Magès collection by its strictly personal and family nature. It seems to have been drawn up a posteriori, probably by a descendant, to trace the entire lineage up to the generation born in the 2000s — well after the passing of Paul Magès on 22 September 1999 (speech by Mr. Raphaël in tribute to Paul Magès).

Its archival value lies less in its genealogical content per se than in what it reveals about the family framework in which the engineer's career took place: the number of children born in Chaville during the 1930s-1950s p. 1 coincides with the period when Magès was developing his work at Citroën, offering a complementary chronological reference to the professional archives in the collection. It should also be noted that his son Pierre, born in 1937, is the author of a caricature of his father kept in the collection (caricature of Paul Magès drawn by his son Pierre), and that Michel and Igor Magès, active in passing on his memory, are among the descendants in this tree.

This document would benefit from being compared with the biographical archives evoking the Magès family's move to Chaville, his Citroën years, and his retirement in Ramatuelle, now well documented in the collection.
