Presentation and original captions

In 1977, Mr. Raphaël, outgoing Mayor of Ramatuelle, having heard of Paul MAGÈS and his presence in his commune, decided to visit him at his house in Pampelonne. Later, he would tell us that having seen Madame and Monsieur MAGES in their house in front of a fireplace, he had wondered a lot. Could he disturb them, they who looked so peaceful. He nevertheless called upon him to stand for the municipal elections, and no one regretted it. Not yet known by the inhabitants of the commune, he nevertheless obtained 496 votes out of 626 votes cast, and became a municipal councillor. During the following elections in March 1983, now known and appreciated by the population of Ramatuelle, it was he who obtained the most votes of the members of the municipal council, 636 votes out of 1143 votes cast. In the process, he was appointed 2nd Deputy in charge of Urban Planning, Tourism and the Environment. He left his mark on Ramatuelle through his skills, his work and his integrity. The people of Ramatuelle welcomed them with great warmth, a reciprocal warmth. He worked in particular on sanitation problems, sea discharge, and currentology for the Ramatuelle sewage treatment plant, and later the sanitation of Pampelonne beach. In August 1983, a mayoral decree gave him delegation as a Civil Registrar, in order to be able to marry his grandson Thierry.

Understanding this document

In this document

This handwritten table lists the members of the Ramatuelle municipal council elected on 6 March 1983 p. 1. It specifies for each the name, status (mayor, numbered deputies, municipal councillors), place of residence (locality) and date of election.

The municipal team

The mayor is RAPHAEL A., residing in Roumégou p. 1. He is surrounded by five deputies, in order: VIE F. (1st deputy, St André), MAGES P. (2nd deputy, residing in Pampelonne), BIANCOTTO A. (3rd deputy, La Messonière), OLIVIER J.P. (4th deputy, Le Plan) and QUARANTA R. (5th deputy, rue St Esprit) — all elected on 6.03.1983 p. 1.

The municipal councillors

Thirteen municipal councillors complete the council, notably ARIZZI N. (Pampelonne), BRUN J. (Bastide Blanche), BRUNO R. and NEMBRINI P. (both Roche des Fées), FRANJOU J. and FRESIA G. (les Aiguiers), LINDEMANN J.P. (Place de l'Ormeau) and also PELLEGRIN M.C. (Place G. Peri), all elected on the same date p. 1.

Paul Magès therefore appears as 2nd deputy mayor, residing in Pampelonne p. 1.

Context

Ramatuelle is a commune in the Var, near Saint-Tropez, where Paul Magès had retired at the end of his career: after 49 years at Citroën, he retired there in September 1974 (photographs of Paul Magès' retirement) and settled there permanently, becoming a municipal councillor in 1977 before acceding here, in 1983, to the rank of 2nd deputy (list of members of the Ramatuelle municipal council since 6 March). The engineer, inventor of the hydropneumatic suspension at Citroën, is also nicknamed "the Professor" there (portrait of Paul Magès in Ramatuelle). The hamlet of Pampelonne, mentioned as his place of residence, is known for its famous beach.

The municipal elections of March 1983 were held in a national context of general elections renewing French municipal councils. Nothing in the document indicates the progress of the campaign or the detailed results of the vote: these elements are covered by other documents in the file.

Archivist's perspective

This document concretely attests to Paul Magès' commitment to local life in Ramatuelle: beyond his status as a simple councillor mentioned elsewhere, he occupies here the function of 2nd deputy mayor, immediately after the mayor and the first deputy p. 1, which confirms the lasting anchoring of this retired Citroën engineer in the municipal affairs of his adopted commune.

This nominative table finds a direct echo in the Deliberation: results of the municipal ballot, which should specify the votes obtained by each candidate, as well as in the mayor's decree delegating functions to Paul Magès, dated 25 August 1983, which specifies the duties entrusted to Magès as 2nd deputy.
