Understanding this document

In this document

This sheet, marked "PAGE No 2", extends a weekly survey of articles and road tests published in several automotive journals, between 21 November 1962 and 23 January 1963.

Unnamed journal at the top of the page (continuous numbering, appears to be The Motor or Autocar)

Week by week, we note in particular:

  • road tests of the NSU Prinz 4 (21.11.62, p. 650), the Riley 4 cyl. 1489 cc (28.11.62, p. 684), the Austin Healey 1100 cc (5.12.62, p. 718), the Anglia super (12.12.62, p. 754), the Volvo 122 (26.12.62, p. 814), the Morris 1100 (9.1.63, p. 882) and the Ford Cortina (23.1.63, p. 980);
  • technical subjects: Coventry Climax 145 bhp engine (28.11.62, p. 688), "Consideration on steam speeds" (19.12.62, p. 780), a booster compressor on ID 19 (19.12.62, p. 790), "Electronic ignition - various solutions" (26.12.62, p. 822), "History of three steam cars" (16.1.63, p. 926) and a Lotus transformation of the Cortina (23.1.63).

Commercial Motor

  • patents for air suspension and U-shaped torsion bars (Ford) (23.11.62, p. 48);
  • road test of an Austin 300 kg van (21.12.62, p. 38);
  • Lockheed disc transmission brake (28.12.62, p. 10);
  • Rover Diesel combustion chamber patent (4.1.63, p. 44).

Automobile Engineer

  • novelties from the London Motor Show, Lockheed anti-lock braking system, engine ignition, mountain brake tests, Cortina front suspension assembly (October 62, p. 370-404);
  • heavy goods vehicle engines, gearboxes, axles, suspension, brakes (November 62, p. 412);
  • DAF 750 car, tyres and body vibrations, Armstrong adjustable shock absorber, BMC Diesel engine, bevel gear finishing (December 62, p. 494-528).

The document continues (mention ".../...") and bears a handwritten "B" stamp in the margin.

Context

In the early 1960s, Citroën marketed the DS/ID 19, equipped with the hydropneumatic suspension invented by Paul Magès. Technical monitoring of the competition — road tests, patents, braking or suspension innovations — was a common practice in the design offices of the automotive industry at the time.

The mention of a "booster compressor on ID 19" refers to an internal subject at Citroën, potentially linked to developments in the hydropneumatic circuit, but the document provides no detail on its content.

Archivist's perspective

This type of bibliographic survey, sober in appearance, is valuable: it shows that the Citroën technical department closely monitored the trade press (Commercial Motor, Automobile Engineer and a third unidentified journal) to follow the competition's innovations in terms of suspension, braking and engine technology.

The presence of an article on the booster compressor on ID 19 p. 790 suggests that it was probably a subject also published externally, and not a strictly internal note — a lead to be cross-referenced with other documents from the Magès collection on hydraulic components.

This sheet is part of the same spirit of documentary monitoring as the cover of the "Hydraulic components" folder, which gathered technical documents over a long period (1949-1970). It constitutes a modest but concrete witness to the technological monitoring methods employed during the DS era.
